Blogmas #14: Haus of Gloi Destash Haul

Have you ever heard of destash? This term means selling your existing stash (of cosmetic products, yarn, you name it) in order to buy new items. I’ve come across this word nowhere else but on Reddit (IMAM again) and decided to buy some perfume oil samples to test them out before committing to a full size.

Want to know more about it? Continue reading. 😉

What’s important when buying from someone’s destash is the seller’s reputation. Like on Ebay, you want to buy from someone who has received good reviews, is transparent, and readily explains whatever you want to know.

I chose a Redditor who seemed friendly and had a nice selection ready to be sold. They quickly responded to my messages, and sent a picture of the products I was interested in. I picked samples by ZOMG Smells, Smelly Yeti, and Haus of Gloi. Since this was my first indie purchase they kindly added a couple more sample vials, for which I am eternally grateful. 🙂 Today’s post is obviously dedicated to the reviews of HoG’s perfume oils and I hope you’ll find them as yummy as I do!

Vice

“Steam billows rolling off a vessel of fresh made Turkish coffee, marshmallow goo tainted by graham cracker crumbs, toasted hazelnuts and blanketed in black chocolate.”

In the bottle I smell dark chocolate with cinnamon. Are these graham crackers? When I apply it and the oil is still wet on my skin I mostly smell cinnamon but also some chocolate and a little less coffee. At first I thought there was no cinnamon in it but mint because the notes were so strong and my newbie nose wasn’t used to them – I later went to smell some ground cinnamon and yeah, it’s definitely present in the perfume oil (PO). As the PO dries down the chocolate and coffee notes fade away and give way to, yes, some more cinnamon, which is sweetened by vanilla, the notes I get to smell as time passes even further. Cinnamon vanilla. Mmmm.

Even though Vice is mostly cinnamon-y on me, and the notes of hazelnut are basically unnoticeable, I like this sweet but spicy gourmand PO quite a lot. However, I’m not sure if I will get a full-sized version of it once the sample vial’s empty.

Sol

“The sun, at its apex: Dry gingergrass, litsea cubeba, neroli, frankincense tears, saffron infused honey, rosemary and the faint touch of true cinnamon bark.”

When I open the bottle it smells mostly citrusy. I can’t pinpoint on the exact note but it smells refreshing and strong. But I suppose this is the case with most PO. On skin it feels like a gourmand-citrus fragrance, the notes of which I cannot quite tell apart. As time moves on I can distinguish gingergrass, some cinnamon (again!), and rosemary. There probably aren’t any notes of grapefruit or orange after all. It might be just rosemary. Sadly I cannot recognise safforn infused honey, neroli, litsea cubeba, and frankincense tears – my nose obviously needs some more training. When the PO dries down I smell warm spices and ginger, and perhaps there’s some rosemary mixed in as well, because the scent does smell refreshing yet warm yet sharp.

I’m not sure what to think of it! I like it but what does it remind me of? Perhaps a warm, spiced drink on a cold winter day? It definitely improves my mood, and I sense it could work as a great meditation scent. I shall try it.

Who Needs Love

“A mahogany box filled with chocolaty orbs, coated in crystallized coffee – filled with a pomegranate and raspberry filling. Who needs love when you have something this decadent?”

There’s a strong chocolate-y, sirup-y scent emanating right from the bottle that transforms into a cake-like scent when applied to my skin. It smells like a very decadent chocolate cake with raspberry syrup and some other berries scattered around. Is there a hint of rum I smell? YUM. As the PO dries down my skin still smells of chocolate and raspberries but in a much subtler way. Perhaps I can smell some cinnamon in there but I might have a slight obsession with it.

Notwithstanding the cinnamon ambiguity, this PO is a hit not only with me but also in the whole Bunny Household. I want to smell it, I want to bathe in it, I want to slather Who Needs Love Pumpkin Butter all over my skin. I might be in love with this scent but I am not ashamed of it.
