One of the reasons why I’m interested in indie makeup is unusual colours, special shimmer, shifting holo or shifting colours etc. ILNP Birefringence is a polish that fits the bill perfectly. ILNP is an American boutique nail polish brand that makes great multi chrome and holographic polishes. The first two ILNP polishes that I’ve bought are Happily Ever After, a silver lilac holographic polish with silver flakes, and My Private Rainbow (Linear + Scattered), a holographic top coat. In this post, however, I’ll review an absolute stunner called Birefringence.
Birefringence is a chromatic nail polish that shifts through blue, teal, violet, pink, purple and gold. It belongs to the brand’s collection of “ultra chrome” polishes that all magically shift from one colour to another. They don’t need a base colour to fully “pop”, which is certainly great for us impatient souls who can’t apply 3+ layers of polish and do nothing for long. 😉
On my nails, Birefrigence sticks to blue, purple and violet but I can catch hints of teal or gold when the light hits it at the right angle(s). The shift is best seen in the bottle but I believe my nail swatches show how interesting this multichrome nail polish really is. I can confirm that you don’t need to apply a base colour (like white or black) to make it bright. However, it does need 3 thin coats to reach full opacity.
The brush is thin but the application isn’t laborious and nail strokes aren’t visible (especially if you have smooth nails). Each layer takes about 10 minutes to fully dry and I find that annoying because I often end up with dents or imprints if I’m not careful. Applying a quick-drying top coat seems to solve this problem, though. On me, the polish lasts for about 4 days before it starts chipping but my nails still aren’t in their top condition (like I’ve mentioned here or here).
This is one of my favourite nail polishes and I’m already looking at other ILNP ultra chrome polishes. The ones that tempt me the most are Peace and Masquerade but I also like the look of Charmed, which is a charming ultra holo sparkly polish.
So, which multi chrome polish should I try next? 😉
